The National Championships this year took place on a testing course near Ludlow, Shropshire. ‘A real National’s course’ I’ve heard it said, probably because of the serious climbing and break-neck descending involved.

The highlight for TORQ this year was two second places with Steve Farmer in the Espoirs and Jeremy Olsen in the Sports category. Steve has rebounded from a very poor season last year where he was plagued with injury and is now truly a force to be reckoned with at Elite level. His best performance of last year was at the National Championships where he managed 6th in Espoirs, so this is a remarkable improvement on an already strong performance. The winner of the Espoirs was Liam Kileen, who just got 3rd at the Commonwealth Games this week (1st Brit home) - nuff said.

You may, or may not have followed a recent debate on the Singletrackworld website, where I and another battled out our differences over some nutritional advice I gave for and leading up to the Red Bull Mountain Mayhem event. Debate is great and necessary, but when two people stick firmly to their guns, it can leave those following it a little dazed and confused. The purpose of these next two articles is to put forward the views of a number of authors with regard to long and short-term nutritional strategies. I will of course give an opinion on these findings, but the most important thing is that all the information’s here, so interpret it how you will…

Here's a few different author's views on long-term nutrition for athletes:

Jason Le Page is a Downhill Mountain Biker who lives on Guernsey (one of the Channel Islands for those of you who may be geographically challenged). I’ve been coaching Jason for the best part of two years now and being a very sporting kind of chap, he has very boldly agreed to ‘Go-Live’ with his progress on a monthly basis as a matter of interest to all of you. Every month you’ll be able to log-on to the TORQ site to see how Jason’s getting on (ed - actually, it's been well over a month since the last report, but read on, because Jason stands to loose quite a clump of cash if he doesn't keep in touch regularly this time. Come on Mr Lepage, your groupies want you to hold on to your wad)…

For all you Downhillers, BSX and BMXers out there, TORQ has now teamed up with DIRT mag to produce regular fitness and performance features. Starting this month with a feature based around training your phosphocreatine (PC) system, you'll then be taken through the whole lot over the coming months - what to eat right through to weight training and race prep…

Carbohydrate is the key to metabolic energy. As well as providing your body with the means to release the energy stored in fat and oxygen (the so called "endurance fuels"), carbohydrate is also called upon when the going gets tough. If the pace in a race suddenly accelerates, or the intensity of exercise is so high that fat and oxygen alone can no longer sustain the energy demand, carbohydrate is used anaerobically (without oxygen) to satisfy this requirement. If your legs start burning, this is caused by a build up of lactic acid, the exhaust fumes of carbohydrate metabolism. So next time your legs burn, you'll know you're using carbo power. In short... without carbohydrate, our metabolism would grind dramatically to a crawl.

That's right - muesli with fresh orange juice. My dad discovered this one and when he prepared me a bowl I thought he was having a laugh. Anyway, I said "what the hell" and stuck me spoon in. Wow!

If you don't believe me, give it a try. Make sure you buy the muesli with no added sugar, pour on your OJ as if it were milk and tuck in. Tangy, nutritious and absolutely blooming fantastic…
