From this point onwards there will be a regular slot in the performance section of the TORQ site dedicated to fast food. No, we’re not talking about MacDonald’s or BK, there’s a different meaning here. For a food to be fast it must contain bags of carbohydrate with as little fat as possible. A moderate amount of protein wouldn’t go amiss either (this tends to happen as a matter of course), but basically the higher the carbs and lower the fat the better.

It is with great sadness that I hear of the death of Ed Burke, the prominent American exercise physiologist and author. I have certainly had the pleasure of benefiting from his written work – as will have most Sports Scientists involved in cycling.

Edmund R. Burke, PhD, was a professor and director of the exercise science program at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. He received his doctorate in Exercise Physiology from Ohio State University, and his master’s degree in Exercise Physiology from Ball State University. He was also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, for which he had also served as Vice President. He was director for the Center of Science and Technology for the US Cycling Team in Colorado Springs from 1982 to 1987. He was also a staff member for the 1980 and 1984 Olympic Cycling Teams.
