    Day 1: 17/08/03
    To: Braintree

Set off at about 1,30pm being waved off by my sister Nadia and her husband Deano. The first couple of miles were, as I expected, wobbly. I didn’t have time to give my fully laden bike a trial run so setting off on it was a bit like riding a bike for the first time again. After about an hour I had got well accustomed to the weight of the bike and was through Ongar and Fyfield in no time, after which I turned off the main road and in to the quiet and picturesque Essex countryside, which is totally underrated for some reason. Having spent a month or so planning this adventure in to the wilds of Europe it seemed weird to start it riding along roads I’ve ridden literally hundreds of times before. In about 3 hours I was at Siobhan and Lengo´s house - Lengo is a life long mate of mine who lives with his partner Siobhan, half way between my home and Harwich International, where I’m getting my ferry tomorrow, which is pretty handy for me right now!

Check out these pictures. Now isn’t this how Mountain Bike racing is supposed to be? Burning sunshine, huge clumps of rock (1000’s of meters of it) and loads of dust and pasta? Beats riding round a flat field in Old Blighty and eating an entrails burger that’s for sure. TORQ-tuned Marcos Schier has just got back from the Italian Iron Bike and this is what he had to say:

Luca sent me through this picture just before the off yesterday (Sunday 17th August). He rode to Mark’s (a friend) house out near Dagenham, Essex yesterday and reckoned he had about 40 miles to do this morning to get to Harwich.

“The real adventure starts when I land in the Netherlands” he said to me on Friday, when I dropped off his first supply of TORQ bars.

As you can see from the pic below, Luca’s looking composed and the head is well streamlined after a visit to the local Sweeny Todd’s late last week.

Luca is one of ‘the lads’, a long-standing school friend, with whom (on numerous occasions) I’ve drunk silly amounts of beer, embarrassed myself in front of the fairer sex and of course cycled many miles. Luca has decided to throw caution to the wind by handing in his resignation at work in order to fulfil his dream - a lengthy expedition through Europe, travelling from London to Istanbul (Turkey) by bike. I will of course be sending batches of TORQ bars to various post offices en-route to give him something to dunk in his European lager…

Over the coming months, the TORQ website will keep those who are interested in Luca’s journey updated with his latest discoveries and exploits.
