Team Manager Rob Barker and Super-Charged Tim Dunford give their accounts of a sunny weekend’s racing at Cheddar…

A black and orange blanket was laid over the Somerset hills at the Kona Bikefest in Cheddar and as I have a fondness for his event, I was extremely happy with our set of results (4 first places). This course has history for me being first team event that I ever undertook. It was traditionally always the end of season bash and one lasting memory is the walk from the campsite to the racetrack and the Autumnal feel that September brings. However, this weekend was more like a heatwave on a Devon beach!

Mix fairy lights, add a splash of blue glow sticks, some banging tunes, a bridge to nowhere, a bit of duck or grouse, mix for around 12 hours, pour in liberal amounts of dust and a supschon of water, oh and not forgetting the most vital ingredient: 500 lycra clad mountain bikers and you have the makings of more fun than you can shake a stick at – TORQ in Your Sleep was in town and the party atmosphere was bubbling over. Brought to you for the second year running by those lovely Gorrick folks, who know a thing or two about fun events, they spent months, mowing, tweaking, shoveling and planning a spiffing 8 mile course with the help of the Army Cycling Union, that took you ‘Nowhere’ and beyond in a cunning figure of 8 encountering along the way a few ‘Duck’ moments, whilst seemingly meeting yourself coming back type thing in the ‘Back to Front ‘ section, if you didn’t get lost in ‘The Maze’ that is!

    Bontrager Twentyfour12 – TORQ Rules!

Twentyfour/12 is a race within a race within a race. With 3 main events running concurrently! Starting at 12pm Saturday were the main field consisting of hundreds of competitors stretched over 19 categories, racing either for 12 or 24 hrs or in the case of one rider both! Then come midnight as riders come home to beer and much needed sleep, the Torchbearers set off in pursuit of dark trails, pedals pounding in the still of the night. Despite the grim weather we’ve been experiencing in our supposedly sizzling BBQ summer, the outlook for the race was good, with crisp blue skies dotted with faint fluffy clouds offering a perfect backdrop to this popular event. For many the 24hr/12 hr enduro is the chance to partake as part of a team of friends & family in an almost festival like feel. Mountain biking at it’s friendliest best. Some riders were taking it seriously but most were just relishing in the chance to test their skills on some of the UK’s best enduro trails. Forget riding in ever decreasing circles around flat mud strewn fields Newnham Park in Plymouth offers challenging terrain in an inspiring setting that would make any mountain biker want to ride for hours and hours…. Suitably inspired were Team TORQ who set the trails alight with their flashes of orange and black as they went in pursuit of glory…

Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana… that's my favourite saying at the moment. Time certainly has been flying as well for the TORQ team. I can hardly believe that we are now hurtling towards autumn, after a barmy 7 months of eager activity. I guess it’s about time we got you up to date with what the boys and girls of Team TORQ have been up to… Sorry for my slackness in updating the news, my ditch as they say flowith over! Now onto where, when, how the team have been performing since January, it’s certainly been a rollercoaster ride with no end in sight just yet.

Just a very quick little article to tell you what I’m up to at the moment, because I reckon you still might have time to join me if you’re really organised? As with last year, it’s shameless that the leading news article on our website still reads ‘Happy Christmas’ and it’s taken us until now to prepare a new story. Our excuse – TORQ is extremely busy at the moment, so I guess that’s a good thing. Anyway, I’m in Australia preparing myself mentally for an epic Mountain Bike race called ‘Terra Australis’, a 550Km off-road challenge run over 7 days…
