Product Summary

TORQ’s 60% Protein Fusilli Spiral Pasta is of exceptionally high quality due to the inclusion of high specification dairy proteins providing a comprehensive amino acid profile. Our pasta looks and cooks like normal pasta, but because of its protein density, simple and convenient meat-free meals can be prepared in the knowledge that the resulting dish will be sufficiently
nutrient-rich.

Our pasta can also be used in conjunction with other high protein foods at times when you consider carbohydrate to be undesirable whilst still giving the perception of a regular higher carbohydrate meal. This product has the mouthfeel and texture of pasta, but exactly the same nutritionals as our 60% Protein Orzo, which has a mouthfeel more like rice. It’s really a matter of you choosing the texture you prefer.

Product Usage

Use TORQ Fusilli as you would regular pasta, but remember to account for the high protein content. The ‘Technical Information’ tab provides further detailed information regarding the diversity of use of this particular product.

Bring a pan of water to the boil and cook for 5-7 minutes, drain and serve. TORQ Fusilli can also be cooked in the microwave, ideally using a specialist ‘pasta’ setting. Cooking time may vary depending on the power output of your microwave oven.

Once cooked, either eat immediately or refrigerate and consume within 48 hours.

TORQ Fusilli as a low-fat meat alternative

Finding good sources of carbohydrate can be relatively easy for athletes and physically active people, but one has to hunt harder for protein. Reliable sources of amino acid-rich protein tend to come from meat, fish and dairy products as well as vegetarian/vegan sources such as soya and quorn. The problem is that many of these sources of protein either require refrigerated storage, are high in fat, require some considered level of preparation, or are held back by a combination of all of these factors.

60% protein is high for a vegetarian product – so high that it eliminates any need for meat or other sources of protein in your dishes. It could even be mixed 50/50 with regular pasta to boost the protein content of recipes that you feel need a helping hand in the protein department.

As TORQ Fusilli can be stored in the same way as regular pasta, in a cupboard, without any specific storage requirements, you’re much less likely to get caught short – nothing worse than a missing/stale item in the fridge when you’re desperate for a balanced and functional post-exercise meal.

The extremely low fat content of TORQ Fusilli is a significant benefit too. Many high protein sources like red meat, nuts, seeds and dairy come with significant amounts of fat. We all need some fat, because vitamins A, D, E and K are dissolved within it, along with the Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, but as rule, we tend to get too much of it and its very calorie-rich. Athletes and physically active people should search for good functional fat sources which are rich in these essential nutrients and avoid unnecessary ‘incidental’ fat, because it slows digestion and from a functional perspective, doesn’t help the body to recover and perform.

The low-fat nature of TORQ Fusilli can be taken advantage of, because lean recipes are quickly absorbed into the blood allowing nutrients to reach their destinations promptly. It also takes the pressure off when choosing other nutrients to combine with your Fusilli, because starting with a low-fat protein sauce will always give you a greater variety of source options, including ones which may be slightly richer than you’d usually choose.

TORQ Fusilli for low carbohydrate training or ‘Training Low’

There are specific times when serious athletes may benefit from performing carefully controlled scheduled training sessions whilst internal glycogen stores are low and exogenous carbohydrate (energy products) aren’t consumed during exercise. TORQ Fusilli for people with Diabetes

Enjoy the texture of pasta without the blood glucose spike. At 60% protein and 20% carbohydrate, our pasta doesn’t behave metabolically like normal pasta, so will have a much more moderate impact on blood glucose, which is particularly useful for people with diabetes. Serve TORQ Fusilli with a bolognaise sauce for instance and the % of calories in your meal derived from carbohydrate will nosedive.

TORQ Fusilli and health benefits for the general population

There are strong arguments in support of lower carbohydrate diets for less physically active people, because a reduction in carbohydrate supresses appetite, reducing calorie consumption. It also reduces the production of insulin, putting less strain on the pancreas. Many of the diseases that the developed world faces today are as a result of physical inactivity and over-consumption of calories. Type 2 diabetes in particular is reaching epidemic levels, due to a combination of lack of exercise, obesity and over-consumption of carbohydrate once obesity has established itself. The mixture of these 3 fundamentals is literally fatal.

We must stress that lean, fit people do not fit into this risk category. Excessive carbohydrate intake becomes a risk factor as body fat levels increase, because this unhealthy level of body fat blunts the insulin response and over-works the pancreas (the organ responsible for producing insulin). In addition, insulin receptors in the muscle, which regulate insulin production thrive in healthy fit muscle tissue, but not in sedentary inactive muscle (the more insulin receptors, the less insulin the pancreas needs to produce to have an effect). Add to this the fact that insulin production is supressed and the pancreas rests during aerobic endurance exercise and you start to understand why inactivity and obesity is so dangerous (and why being slim, fit and exercising regularly is so good). And we’re only talking about diabetes here. It’s well documented that regular exercise and weight management provide significant protection against heart disease and many cancers.

We would never advocate a healthy diet and no exercise, because regular exercise is the most important disease-preventing psychologically uplifting behaviour you could possibly exhibit. That said, some people exercise more than others and the less you do, the less you need to eat – and if you are carrying excess body fat, as explained above, this is where excessive carbohydrate can become an issue.

TORQ Fusilli offers clear benefits for less active people. It’s low in fat, so is lower in calories than other common higher fat protein sources and contains low levels of carbohydrate (only 20%), so it will help to supress appetite and reduce insulin output if eaten alongside a protein-rich sauce and salad/fresh vegetables. Typically, in the general population, a ‘high protein’ diet tends to, in actual fact, lean towards being a ‘high protein/high fat’ diet and there are health risk factors associated with high fat intakes too. This happens because of the lack of high protein, low fat choices available, so that’s where TORQ Fusilli fits in – a product that is high protein and low fat that will help you to reduce unnecessary ‘incidental’ fat intake.
