Nestled in the heart of the Rhône-Alpes and surrounded by a veritable who’s who of mountain peaks like the Galibier and Alpe d’Huez, the Col de la Croix de Fer may not be quite as well known as its more celebrated siblings, but that’s not to say it’s any less spectacular. 

“Pacing, pacing, pacing, should be circulating in your head like a broken record throughout, especially as the steepest gradients up to 15% come in the final kilometre”, says The Col Collevtive’s Mike Cotty.

As one of the rare climbs that has featured in both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France, the Col d’Izoard was always destined for greatness, climbing its way up to 2,360m elevation, the Izoard is a beautiful beast at over 30km in length from Guillestre. 

On his first visit to Andorra, TORQ Fuelled Mike Cotty was fortunate enough to ride the 18.3km climb of Arcalís (the final ascent of Stage 9 of the 2016 Tour de France) with resident pro, Dan Martin, from the Cannondale-Garmin Team, giving him a  few tips along the way…

   

Starting in Ordino, Mike’s video shows the climb up to the Arcalís ski station, 18.3km long with an average gradient of 5.2%.
