Phil Martin is relatively new to the world of running, having only started racing competitively around 2 years ago, but he has already proved that he has what it takes to make the podium.
Phil initially started running to improve his fitness and to complement his cycling, however, it turned out that he was much stronger on 2 feet than on 2 wheels! This created the switch to running and Phil has focused all his training and racing on this for the last 12 months, although he still loves getting out cross training on the bike.
Running has become his passion and Phil can regularly be seen training on his local roads and trails around Peterborough – where he racks up the miles. Phil competes in every distance from 5k’s through to Ultras, be it training, Parkruns or racing; Phil just loves to get out and be part of the local running community, pushing his body to see what it can achieve and what he is capable of. This mentality has brought a fair amount of success over the past season with a number of podium finishes over a variety of distances, both on the road and on trail.
His biggest achievements to date, included completing the World’s oldest Ultramarathon – ‘Comrades,’ which takes place in the brutal African heat, then more recently, the British Masters Half Marathon Championships where he became both Eastern Counties and British Champion in the Vet 35 category. Unsurprisingly, the harder he has worked the better he has become, and working and training hard is something he plans to continue going forward.
Goals for the future include representing Great Britain at The European Masters Half Marathon Championships in the Algarve, in May 2016, competing for more Eastern Counties and British Masters titles, as well as plenty more podium finishes, both on the Trail and the Road.
Phil plans on getting even quicker at all distances and believes that there’s a lot more in the tank to come! TORQ warmly welcomes Phil to the Team and we wish him the very best of luck in his training and racing.
The TORQ Running Team is sponsored by the following and without them we would not be able to do what we do, thank you:
