Trilogy 1st

Ian competed in his last race of the season and what a successful year it has been? He achieved yet another podium and finished the Trilogy series in first place. Here’s what Ian had to say…

Fleetwood was my last race of the season and was also the final round of the Trilogy Series. Going into the race, I was leading the series by just over a minute, so I had to be within 63 seconds of my nearest rival Andy Bray in order to clinch the series title.

Fleetwood bike

As with most pool-based triathlons, the race becomes a time trial as people are seeded solely on their swim ability and then start in waves at different times. I exited the water in the lead (of my wave) in under 5:40 for 400m and headed to a cold and windy transition. Exiting transition, I had it all to do on the two lap bike course. I was passed early on into the bike leg – the positive side to this was that I had somebody to aim for and to keep within my sights over the 20km and this I managed to do. The entire bike leg was challenging. Working hard into a blustery wind meant that there was little by means of recovery, but fortunately when I dismounted I did have my ‘running legs’ so that was a relief.

Fleetwood run

I ran hard out of transition and was very pleased to see the wave leader only seconds in front of me. I passed him within the first 1km and extended my lead. I finished with the fastest run split of the day and had beaten Andy by just on 20 seconds, hence took the overall series win and 2nd overall on the day.

A great way to finish a busy yet successful season.
